“My brother’s keeper”

Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?”

“I don’t know,” he replied. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”

~Genesis 4:9

“Am I my brother’s keeper?” Am I responsible for my brother? Is my brother (or sister) really my responsibility, or can I just worry about caring for myself?

Cain hadn’t cared for his brother Abel. Cain had been focused on himself and on his own wellbeing. Something that we can all be guilty of doing.

But Jesus was different. On the cross, Jesus took the responsibility of his brothers and sisters, he took the responsibility for us. Jesus was our ‘keeper’, and took the responsibility for us.
